Although there are many types of neuromas, the one we are concerned with in this book is Morton's neuroma, a benign, painful, swollen growth of nerve tissue, usually occurring between the base of the third and fourth toes, although it can occur between any two toes. The neuroma, which may be soft or hard and can vary in size, usually occurs on one foot only and affects more women than men. There are several other kinds of neuromas, which include acoustic neuroma, a benign tumor of the acoustic nerve (the eighth cranial nerve) leading from the brain to the inner ear that can cause dizziness and lead to hearing loss. If the tumor grows very large, it can press on the trigeminal nerves.... Cystic neuroma, also called false neuroma, is a tumor of the nerve tissue that has become sac-like (cystic). Ganglionar neuroma occurs in the stomach area, usually in children. Multiple neuroma, also known as endocrine neoplasis (type IIB), or neuromatosis, is numerous benign tumors of nerve cells and fibers in the mucous membrane. Myelinic neuroma, also known as medullated neuroma or fascicular neuroma, is a tumor made of covered nerve fibers. Traumatic neuroma occurs after severe injury to a nerve. Also in this entry:
