Osteoarthritis is inflammation and pain in a joint. It generally affects older people, women more than men, and is often referred to as the wear-and-tear disease because it results from gradual deterioration of the cartilage in the joints. When cartilage is not present to protect the joints, the bones rub against each other, creating pain that can be severe.
